Simulations, especially those using multiple colour or grey levels, have artifacts. (Win8 and Win7, probably earlier OS also)

Via Control Panel go to 'Personalization'. Click 'Display'. Set 'Make it easier to read your screen' to 100%(default). If you need larger text try setting the scaling to 126% rather than 125 in 'Set custom text size'. Thanks to Steven Boersma for identifying and solving this one. 22 Sept '13
