Alpine Sun Pillar

Pillars are formed by the collective glints of millions of plate shaped ice crystals reflecting sunlight towards the eye.

The plates drift with their large hexagonal faces nearly horizontal. The crystals wobble around this position and the greater the wobble the taller is the pillar.
