Reflected Rays

Images by Boris Borisovich (Snowman-pro) at the mouth of the Varzuga river famed for its salmon fishing and draining into the White Sea, Kola Peninsula, Russia.

Rays stream downwards to the water from the sun hidden behind the clouds.

More strangely, rays also radiate upwards from the water. These are rare reflected crepuscular rays.

Downward rays striking calm and smooth water or a smooth wetted river bank are reflected back upwards.

The reflected rays, like the downwards ones are all parallel. Perspective makes the upward going reflected rays appear to diverge from a point as far below the horizon as the sun is above it.

In the top image the rays visibly appear to widen as they approach the camera and before they retreat overhead.
