High altitude pillar
Halos are found in surprising places. Halo enthusiast Martha
Dawson of Squaw Valley, California saw this one midway between
England and Greenland in November '01.
Horizontally aligned plate crystals in very high thin cirrus
haze were sufficient to form the pillar above the sun which
lingered on the horizon as the 'plane chased it westwards.
