Polarized Light Fogbow Moncayo Mountain, Spain

Pedro-Luis Cuadrado (site) photographed this scene on 13th October 2001 near the summit of Moncayo Mountain (2373m) in north-east Spain. The image is not quite as was seen with the unaided eye. The complex appearance results from use of a polarizing filter on the camera. Fogbows are strongly polarized and the position of the supernumerary bows depends on the whether vertically or horizontally polarized light is imaged. The supernumeraries are also more intensely coloured in polarized light.   Image© Pedro-Luis Cuadrado, shown with permission.
