book ) saw this sharply triangular shadow from the 2,400m
summit. The mountain profile (right) is irregular and very decidely
non triangular. It neatly demonstrates that mountain shadows do not
mimic the shape of their mountain. The peak houses the Observatorio
del Roque de los Muchachos (IAC). The large dome is that
of the 4.2m William Herschel telescope. Large
